Self-Love Stories: Sarah
May 15, 2021
Meet Sarah! She is a self-love blogger based in Australia who uses her own experience with depression to help women learn how to be happy and proud of who they are. In today’s post, she will share how learning to love herself changed her life and why it’s so important for you to love who you are too.
Tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m a blogger at Proud Happy Brave where I help you to be proud of who you are, create more happiness in your life and cheer you on to be brave enough to go after your dreams.
After struggling with self-hatred, severe depression and anxiety for years, I found the key to my recovery was learning to like myself and be my own best friend. Now I’m passionate about helping women to feel good about themselves and all they can achieve because I believe everyone shines their brightest when they celebrate their own uniqueness.
* I love to have impromptu dance sessions at home (and they’re really good for boosting my mood!!).
* I live on a farm in Australia with my husband, 2 horses, 4 chickens and a cat.
* In my downtime I love to spend time in nature, read and do puzzles.
* My favourite drink is ho-cho (aka hot chocolate!!).
Describe an area of your life where you felt less confident and how you overcame it.
I have always been shy and I used to hate drawing attention to myself – what if I muck up and people laugh at me or tease me??!! I was always expecting to make a mistake whenever someone put me on the spot. As a result, I would hide away and avoid interacting with strangers. I always felt so awkward in social situations.
After building up my self-worth and self-esteem, I felt more comfortable in my own skin and became more confident in trying new things and opening up to new people – heck, I even started a blog!!
Through learning to like myself and cheering myself on like I’m my own best friend, I have grown more confident in being seen and sharing what I learnt with others so that they might feel more confident as well.
Why is self-love important, and how do you practice it in your life today?
Loving yourself makes SUCH a difference in how you experience life.
When I hated myself, I was my own worst enemy, constantly putting myself down and judging myself harshly. I thought it was good to be hard on myself and that it would make me a better person. I was so wrong!!
It was through loving myself that I finally started to come out of my shell and flourish. I started to see my own value.
These days, I practice self-love by treating myself with kindness and encouragement. I give myself what I need to be healthy and happy – I practice self-care, I journal on my thoughts & feelings, I give myself time for rest, and I make time for fun!
Practicing self-love makes life so much more enjoyable!
What advice would you give someone who is struggling to love who they are?
Loving yourself is more about your thoughts and feelings towards yourself than who you actually are so stop trying to “fix” yourself. There is nothing wrong with you, you are amazing just as you are – you just need to start believing it.
To build up feelings of love towards yourself, start treating yourself like someone you already love. Talk to yourself kindly, take care of your needs – eat well, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, move your body, etc., and work on shifting unhelpful thought patterns, stories and beliefs.
And know that it can take time, it’s a journey. And everybody’s journey is different (so stop comparing yourself to others!). There will be ups and downs, twists and turns, just do your best to be gentle with yourself.
How does the work you do now help build confidence in others?
The work that I do to help others to feel comfortable in their own skin naturally leads to better confidence in themselves. When we feel good about ourselves, we tend to care less about what other people think and are braver about trying new things and going after our dreams, so any work you do on improving your self-esteem, self-worth and self-belief is going to help build up your confidence as well (win-win!!).
